Lowie's collection of lyocell trousers are not only a wardrobe staple, but kind to the planet to! 🌱

Lyocell made from eucalyptus lyocell recovers over 99% of solvents in closed-loop production and uses only 600-800 litres of water per kilogram versus around 2,700 for cotton.

Where does it come from?

Eucalyptus is a woody flowering tree or shrub native primarily to Australia and Southeast Asia, although varieties now also grow in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. The trees are widely known for their essential oils used for cleaning purposes and as a natural insecticide.

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fibre that is derived from cellulose extracted from eucalyptus wood pulp. The production of lyocell follows a process very similar to semi-synthetic fibres such as viscose bamboo, but with crucial technological differences that significantly reduce its environmental impact.

The Process

Eucalyptus wood is harvested, chipped and pulped, then dissolved using amine oxide mixed with water to create a syrupy cellulose solution. This solution is filtered by being pushed through fine nozzles called spinnerets and spun into long, white lyocell fibres that can be spun into yarn and woven into textiles.

So... what makes this a sustainable practice? ♻️💧

  1. Unlike traditional viscose that relies heavily on toxic chemicals, the lyocell process entirely avoids hazardous substances.
  2. The closed-loop manufacturing system also distinguishes it from other regenerated fibres. Solvent used during processing is recovered and reused at a rate of up to 99%.
  3. This loop also limits water consumption and energy demand compared to conventional viscose and cotton production.
  4. Eucalptus trees are primarily reliant on rainwater, requiring significantly less artificial irrigation than cotton farming.
  5. The smooth surface of lyocell fibres reduces friction during weaving and finishing, lowering mechanical stress and extending the garment's lifespan.

How to care for your Lowie Lyocell Wide Leg Trousers:

🫧Washing: Wash at a maximum of 30ºC on a gentle/ or delicate machine cycle. Turn the garment inside out and place in mesh laundry bag. Use mild liquid detergent - no bleach or fabric softeners as they break down the fibres and  ruin breathability.

🧺Drying: Air drying is best - leave flat to dry on a drying rack and do not twist or wring out garments as it stretches and warps the fibres.

👔Ironing: Lyocell is naturally resistant to wrinkles but if your garment needs ironing use a low heat setting and iron on the reverse side. Handheld steamers are the safest option!
